Our Story
Rough Castle, an ancient Roman fortress, lies underused and underappreciated.
It should be so much more. It should be experienced. It should be loved. It should be a beating heartbeat of our community. And so it shall.
We’re going to use the land surrounding Rough Castle itself to present a variety of attractions, from winter wonderlands to summer events — experiences that will bring life back to the ancient woodland.
It’s not our woodland. It’s yours. So, come and experience it like never before.
Our Philosophy
We are small team with big ambition to bring life back to Rough Castle and the communities who love and use the site.
We are part of the community and use local suppliers, businesses, and employees to support the local economy and bring communities together. Our employees are trained and invested in, we provide a fun, exciting and safe place of work. Former members of our team are now Police Officers, Prison Wardens, Engineers, and business owners. We want you to be the best you can be.
Our belief is if we can give back to the communities that support us, we should, and, we do. We work with Driving Force taking patients to appointments, support Respitality Scotland to provide carers with a break, and have partnered with Strathcarron Hospice. We do this because we can, and we should.
We have invested in new path networks throughout the Rough Castle Woodlands site providing access for more users. We did this to make our historical site and our events and experiences accessible for as many people as possible.
We are innovative, creative, entrepreneurial people who try to do things the right way, not the way it has always been done, we do this by being honest and open.
With us, what you see is what you get. Warts and all.
Our Mission
Our organisation sets about to bring people together in a unique historic woodland setting to enjoy events and experiences and give back to our local communities where and how we can.
We love the great outdoors, the beauty, the health benefits of getting outside and the amazing history and heritage on our doorstep. We want to encourage you to get outside and take some pride in what’s around.
Whether you take a stroll around our new footpath network, ride your bike through our woodlands, Segway on your very own personal transporter – environmentally friendly of course – or join us for exciting seasonal events, we want to share our phenomenal site with you.
We’ll bring you some fun and exciting experiences along the way, emphasising our site’s natural beauty and capturing your imagination with events and experiences along the way.

The Army Cadets from 3 companies of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlander’s Battalion Army Cadet Force, really enjoyed themselves at the event organised by Rough Castle Experience its safe to say it was great end to their two week Summer Cadre Training and are still talking about it now, excellent fun provided by a great and reputable company. It was especially good after the lack of cadet activities due to the COVID pandemic.

Fantastic to have had rough castle experiences organise our event. Rhiannon made everything so easy all we had to do was turn up and enjoy the full day. Every cadet enjoyed every single activity including the adult instructor’s. The full day was was run very smoothly. All staff were extremely helpful and went that extra mile to make the experiences an amazing day. Highly recommended.
